#5) TVLifer has tried to make this process as easy as possible for all our users. You can simply upload your video to YouTube and once you have a TVLifer account, just place the URL address in your account settings under Video Resume and click submit. As a suggestion, TVLifer urges against putting your name, station call letters or any identifying information in your video tags or description to avoid searchability. If your video resume runs longer than 10 minutes you will have to add it in two sections and submit both URL addresses to TVLifer. Also if you want to keep a reporter tape and anchor tape on file, you simply add both URL addresses to your TVLifer account. Both tapes will be viewable by news directors at the same time when you apply for an open position.
If you want to submit your resume for Critic's Corner, you must upload your video resume to YouTube and submit the URL in the form provided on the Critic's Corner homepage.
#6) Once you have filled out all the information on your TVLifer profile and uploaded your video resume, make sure that you have also registered for a full membership to search and apply for jobs on TVLifer.
Once you have a full membership, log in and click on Job Search. This will allow you to classify your search by market size, job type, region, etc. Once you find a position that interests you, simply click on the Apply button to send your materials. At this point you can upload or write a cover letter for this specific job to give the news director a little more information about your experience and what you'll bring to the job. The cover letter is optional, but after that you can move on to apply to an unlimited amount of jobs for just the one-time fee that created your full membership.
#7) Submit your video resume to get feedback from industry experts in various positions. These critiques are not only for on-air talent, at times TVLifer will have producers, photographers and news managers to view tapes and give honest, constructive criticism. In order to get this free service, you must be willing to have your video resume viewable to the entire TVLifer community so that others can learn from your critique. The TVL staff hopes to create an environment for learning from industry professionals at no cost.
Click on Critic's Corner and follow the instructions to submit your reel. Choose which one of reels you would like to have critiqued from the pull down menu. Please understand that we receive hundreds of requests for reviews, so everyone's video resume will not be selected in the process. We will certainly do our best.
#8) TVLifer Spotlight brings you the experiences of local reporters, producers, photographers and other staff in newsrooms across the country. There are trials and tribulations everyday in the world of television, but at the same time there are triumphs every night when the news gets on the air. #9) Just have your news director contact TVLifer by email at stationoftheweek@tvlifer.com. It is helpful if your station has a video tour shot and edited to send to the TVL staff (QuickTime file) to let TV professionals get a true feel for life at your station. If you are a news director but have not enrolled yet please sign up on our homepage and then contact us with any questions or feedback.
#10) The choice to hire an agent can be tough. When is the right time? Who should I hire? Do they find me or do I find them? At TVLifer you'll get the answers to these questions from the top agents in the industry. The TVL staff will try to bring you stories of success and failure with agents to paint a clear picture on what you should do when the time comes to make a decision.
#11)Off the Record was devised to keep the rumor mill spinning and give TVLifers a heads up on what is happening in newsrooms across the country. If you have a tip on an upcoming job opening at a station, you can anonymously give the TVLifer community a heads up. All you need to do is send us your tip via the Drop Box which can be found in the Off the Record section or on any market page. The TVL staff will also post discussion topics from time to time to get a feel for the pulse of the television industry.
